Aero Peppermint – It’s Aero, but Minty

Sometimes these candy reviews basically write themselves, and sometimes… they do not.  This one definitely falls into the latter category.

I mean, it’s right there in the name.  It’s minty Aero.  It tastes exactly how you think it’s going to taste.  It’s Aero that’s minty.  The end.

Aero Peppermint

Oh, that’s not enough?  Fine, a bit more.  Here’s the thing: it’s Aero… that’s minty.  What?  Did I say that already?  Fine.

Aero Peppermint

The chocolate is nice and creamy, the bubbles give it that interesting texture that Aero fans know and love, and the whole thing is very, very sweet.  But the strong minty flavour (this is absolutely not a subtle bar) makes the sweetness feel right.  It’s tasty stuff.

Milky Bar – Average White Chocolate

Here’s something odd: the wrapper of the Milky Bar I ate for this review contains two separate lists of ingredients.  One of them is on the wrapper itself, and one is on a sticker, presumably put there by the company that imported the British bar into Canada.

Milky Bar

The lists are surprisingly different.  Most pressingly, the sticker version lists sugar as the first ingredient, directly contradicting the wrapper’s proclamation that “milk is our no. 1 ingredient.”  Is milk the number one ingredient or not?  Who am I supposed to believe??

Anyway, it’s plain white chocolate, so there’s not much to it.  I should note that the sticker on the front of the wrapper is keen to point out that’s it’s actually a “white chocolaty candy bar” rather than a white chocolate candy bar, presumably due to the inclusion of vegetable fat supplementing the cocoa butter.

Milky Bar

It’s tasty enough.  I guess it’s not technically real white chocolate, but it’s fairly creamy.  True to its name, it has a pronounced milky flavour.  It’s not the best white chocolate you’ll ever eat, but it’ll do in a pinch.

Mirage – Milk Chocolate with a Unique Texture

The continued existence of both Mirage and Aero is somewhat baffling to me.  They’re both pretty much the exact same thing — plain, aerated milk chocolate — and they’re both made by Nestle.

Mirage

Aero easily has the higher profile, so why Nestle hasn’t just discontinued Mirage for being completely redundant is a bit of a head-scratcher.

The biggest difference between the two, as far as I can tell, is that the bubbles in Mirage seem a bit smaller.  But I’d have to eat them side-by-side to know for sure.

Mirage

They’re otherwise pretty much exactly the same: overly sweet, okay-quality milk chocolate that’s elevated by the pleasant texture you get from the aeration.  The chocolate here would be just so-so without the delightful bubbliness, but the unique texture it brings definitely makes this worth trying out.

M&M’s Milk Chocolate Bar with Minis & Peanuts – Stop Being Stingy with the Peanuts

I’ve already reviewed the M&M’s Milk Chocolate Bar with Minis & Crisp Rice, which I thought was decent enough, but lacking in crispiness.  Well this is basically the same thing, but instead of not having enough crispy rice, it doesn’t have enough peanuts.

It’s a bit better than that one, I guess.  If you get a square with both M&M’s and peanuts, it’s pretty tasty.  But the amount of M&M’s and peanuts is dispiritingly anemic — particularly the peanuts.

M&M's Milk Chocolate Bar with Minis & Peanuts

I guess they’re trying to cut costs?  But just charge a bit more and give me more peanuts.  Look at the photo of the cross-section of the bar.  No rational person could possibly believe that there are enough nuts there.  Look at it.  Look at it and weep.

M&M's Milk Chocolate Bar with Minis & Peanuts

Still, it’s not bad.  The chocolate is middling, but tasty enough, and when the bar delivers on what it promises, it’s good.  The slight crunch from the peanuts and the M&M’s works very well with the creamy chocolate.  But then you get a square that’s just plain, mediocre chocolate, and why?  Why is this happening?  As if 2020 hasn’t been bad enough, now I have to deal with this?  Come on.

M&M’s Milk Chocolate Bar with Minis & Crisp Rice – Needs More Crispiness

Why does the M&M on the packaging of this bar look so worried?  Is it because he knows he’s about to be entombed in milk chocolate and then eaten?  I’ve always found it odd that anthropomorphized M&M’s are the face of the candy.  Why would an M&M want you to eat M&M’s??  Are those not his brothers and sisters?  At least the look of terror on the M&M on the wrapper is honest about what the experience of being an M&M must be like.

But I digress.  Outside of the ethical implications of eating a sentient being who has the capacity to feel fear for his own mortality, this was fine, I guess?

M&M's Milk Chocolate Bar with Minis & Crisp Rice

The bar consists of mini M&M’s and crispy puffed rice surrounded by milk chocolate.  It’s not bad, but it’s not something I’m particularly keen to rush out and buy again.

The milk chocolate is typical M&M’s chocolate — it’s a bit too sweet and it’s not exactly the best chocolate you’ll ever eat, but mostly, it’s creamy and tasty.  It’s chocolate.  It’s fine.

M&M's Milk Chocolate Bar with Minis & Crisp Rice

The biggest issue is that there aren’t nearly enough M&M’s and puffed rice to bring the bar all that much crispiness.  It’s neither here nor there; the level of crispiness is too mild to be satisfying.  It makes the bar feel pointless.  I’d much rather eat something way crispier, or not crispy at all.  This particular bar teases crispiness but doesn’t deliver.  It’s frustrating.
