Ferrero Hazelnut Eggs – A Delicious Easter Treat

Do you like Ferrero Rocher? If you do, I can pretty much guarantee you’ll like Ferrero Hazelnut Eggs. If you don’t, you’re a straight-up maniac and I’m going to have to insist that you drive yourself to your local police station so that you can be put away for life. You are not to be trusted out in the world.

For everyone else, Ferrero Hazelnut Eggs are delicious, though they’re basically like a less hazelnutty version of Ferrero Rocher, so they can’t help but feel like a bit of a downgrade.

Like Ferrero Rocher, these eggs feature a milk chocolate and wafer exterior encasing a creamy chocolate/hazelnut centre. This is an objectively delicious combo, with a great contrast between crispy and creamy, so it pretty much goes without saying that these things are extremely tasty. But I missed the chopped hazelnuts that you get on the outside of a Ferrero Rocher, not to mention the whole hazelnut within.

The outer layer of milk chocolate is a bit more generous here, which is nice, but the whole thing is probably a tad sweeter than it needs to be.

If I had the choice I doubt I’d ever pick one of these over a Ferrero Rocher, which makes them feel a bit redundant, but it’s hard to deny that they’re delicious.

Duplo – Like a Hazelnutty Kit Kat

Confusingly, Ferrero actually makes two different European candy bars called Duplo; one features three segments, each with a whole hazelnut surrounded by chocolate cream, and the other is a Kit-Kat-esque wafer bar infused with hazelnut. This particular one is the wafer variety, and it’s made in Poland, with nothing but Polish on the wrapper.

It’s quite good. It has so much resemblance to a Kit Kat that it would be hard for it not to be tasty. The wafer is nice and crispy, the chocolate is creamy, and the pronounced hazelnut flavour compliments it perfectly.

I wish the quality of the chocolate were better (it’s a bit one-note sweet), and the crispiness of the wafer could be more pronounced. But mostly, this is an above average chocolate bar that really capitalizes on the inherent tastiness of the hazelnut/chocolate combo.

Hazelnut Spread M&M’s – M&M’s + Nutella = Delicious?

Hazelnut Spread M&M’s are basically M&M’s stuffed with Nutella. That’s about as close to a surefire hit as you can get, isn’t it? M&M’s and Nutella are both delicious, obviously, so there was no way this wasn’t going to be good.

And yeah, it is predictably tasty, if not quite the taste extravaganza I might have hoped.

I should note that the wrapper states that it’s a new recipe, so if you’ve had this before, maybe they’ve improved it? Or maybe they’ve made it worse? I have no idea; this is my first time trying it.

It basically tastes how you want it to taste, with a few minor caveats. There’s something slightly off about the flavour that I couldn’t quite put my finger on; it was also a bit more sweet than it needs to be. And I wish the hazelnut filling were creamier, or more accurately, creamy at all — it’s dense and grainy. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it feels like a missed opportunity (and a bit misleading; there is literally nothing spreadable about the “spread” in the middle of these candies).

Also, it’s not a Peanut M&M — the undisputed king of M&M’s — which makes me wonder: why would I eat this when Peanut M&M’s exist in the world? Peanut M&M’s are the ultimate M&M, and if you disagree with this, you’re wrong about M&M’s and wrong about the way you’ve chosen to live your life.

Kit Kat Hazelnut Crunch – A Sweet Combo of Chocolate and Hazelnut

Like Kit Kat Senses, Kit Kat Hazelnut Crunch kind of feels like Nestle’s attempt to do their own version of a Ferrero product. This one isn’t quite as blatant, but with its combo of milk chocolate, hazelnut pieces, and crispy wafers, it’s hard not to think of a Ferrero Rocher.

But then there’s no creamy filling, so maybe I’m just seeing connections where there are none. Ferrero certainly can’t lay claim to the chocolate/hazelnut combo.

Kit Kat Hazelnut Crunch is tasty enough, but if I had the choice between this and a Ferrero Rocher, I’d pick the latter ten times out of ten. It’s no comparison.

The main issue is the intense level of sweetness, which kinda bulldozes all of the bar’s other flavours. The taste of the chocolate and hazelnut are certainly there, but they’re in the background.

A standard Kit Kat is balanced out somewhat by the wheatiness of the wafers, but the chocolate version here isn’t quite able to perform that function.

Still, the snappy chocolate has a nice creamy texture, and the hazelnut bits add a decent amount of crunch. Between that and the crispy wafers, the texture here is quite satisfying. And it’s nearly impossible to go wrong with chocolate and hazelnut; making a candy bar with that combo is almost like cheating. You’d have to work pretty hard to mess it up.

Les Reclettes de L’Atalier: Raisins, Almonds & Hazelnuts – Creamy, Crunchy, and Chewy

You know that a company is trying very hard to make their candy seem gourmet when they pull out the French. Les Reclettes de L’Atalier; oh la la. Well that must be fancy.

Aside from the pretentious name, this is basically a Cadbury Fruit & Nut bar, but with the addition of hazelnuts.

It’s good (sorry — I mean c’est bon). If you like Fruit & Nut, it’s a safe bet you’ll like this; the flavour of the chocolate is actually quite similar, and the addition of hazelnuts is a welcome one.

I mean, the chewy/crunchy/creamy combo is always going to be great, and the quality of the chocolate is pretty decent. It’s sweeter than it needs to be (the addition of more sweetness thanks to the raisins doesn’t help), but the nicely toasted nuts do a decent job of balancing it out. It’s not going to blow anyone’s mind, but if you’re looking for a decent quality piece of chocolate, you could certainly do worse.
