Mars Bar – One of the Greats

Mars Bar (A.K.A. Milky Way if you’re in the States) is an absolute classic.  It’s essentially the platonic ideal of a candy bar: it’s chocolatey, substantial, chewy, sweet, and thoroughly satisfying.  It’s always been one of my favourites — I haven’t had one in years, and it might have been even better than I remembered.

(In fact, I think I was so eager to eat it that I actually forgot to take a photo of the bar itself.  Whoops.)

It’s extremely simple: it’s just nougat, caramel, and chocolate.

Mars Bar

Everything here just works.  The fluffy nougat and dense caramel are chewy, but not aggressively so (it’s not going to work out your jaw like some overly enthusiastic nougat or caramel bars).  The nougat has malted milk powder mixed in, which might just be the bar’s secret weapon.  It adds a delightfully malty flavour that brings some complexity and helps to balance out the intense sweetness of the bar.  Mars Bar is very, very sweet, but it’s a well-tuned sweetness; it never tastes overbearing.

And then, of course, there’s the generous layer of decent quality milk chocolate, which is what you want it to be.  Sometimes the chocolate on a candy bar is basically there for appearances only, or just to bind everything together, but the chocolate here adds a lot to the bar.  It’s good stuff.

Maltesers Teasers – A Chocolatey Twist on a Classic

Maltesers Teasers was a lot more Maltesersy than I was expecting.  That’s a bit of a weird thing to say — Maltesers is right there in the name, after all — but sometimes these spin-off bars only have a very tenuous connection to the original.  That’s definitely not the case here.

Teasers is basically a plain chocolate bar, but with bits of the classic Maltesers malty crispiness interspersed throughout.  I think the chocolate itself might also be infused with a malty flavour, because that taste is quite pronounced.

Maltesers Teasers

It’s really good.  If you like classic Maltesers (and what’s not to like??) then I can pretty much guarantee that you’ll like this.  It’s basically reverse Maltesers — Maltesers is crispy with a bit of a creamy chocolaty hit, and Teasers is creamy with a bit of a crispy malty hit.  But the flavour is basically identical; the only real difference is the creamy-to-crispy ratio.

Maltesers Teasers

It’s very, very sweet, but the thoroughly malty flavour does a great job of balancing it out and ensuring that it never feels one-note cloying.  It’s delicious.

Maltesers – Crispy, Bite-Sized Goodness

Maltesers have always been a favourite of mine. There’s something about those chocolately, malty little balls that I find kind of irresistible.

Odds are, you’re probably more familiar with Whoppers than with Maltesers – as far as I’m aware, Maltesers are hard to come by in the States, while Whoppers are quite prevalent. That’s a shame, as I feel like Maltesers are clearly the superior product, though I’d have to do a side-by-side comparison to be sure.

Maltesers

Basically, Maltesers are crunchy, malt-flavoured balls (the package describes them as “Honeycombed centres”), covered in a relatively thin layer of milk chocolate.

Maltesers

They’re lightly crunchy, with a fairly complex malted taste – there’s a hint of bitterness, but not in a bad way. They’re sweet, but not intensely so, with a vaguely honey-like aftertaste. The milk chocolate coating complements the centre really well. They’re quite good; if you’re only familiar with Whoppers, I’d definitely recommend that you seek these out.
