Reese Outrageous! Stuffed with Pieces – Sweetness Overload

I’ll admit that Reese Nutrageous isn’t one of my favourite candy bars.  Reese’s Pieces, on the other hand, is one of my favourites.  So what do you get when you cram a great candy into a mediocre one?

Uh… nothing great, that’s for sure.

Reese Outrageous! Stuffed with Pieces

Reese Outrageous (sorry, Reese Outrageous!) is basically a Nutrageous, but with the peanuts replaced with Reese’s Pieces.

The problem here is that it’s just way, way too sweet.  With a standard Reese Peanut Butter cup you get a very strong peanut butter flavour along with a nice hit of salt to balance things out.  There’s no such balance here; just an in-your-face level of chewy sweetness that’s a bit exhausting to eat.

Reese Outrageous! Stuffed with Pieces

There’s a tiny bit of peanut butter in the middle of this thing, but it’s completely overwhelmed by the dense caramel and the generous layer of very sweet milk chocolate.  The Reese’s Pieces add some nice crunch and more peanut butter flavour, but those candies are basically perfect on their own; they’re very sweet, but the sweetness feels finely tuned.  Once you add on caramel and chocolate, it throws things off.  It’s too much.

Kinder Chocolate – Like the Egg, But Without the Toy

Kinder Chocolate is pretty easy to describe: it’s essentially just a Kinder Surprise in bar form. It is perhaps a tad creamier than a Kinder egg, but otherwise the taste is pretty much identical.

Kinder Chocolate

Kinder Chocolate is a smaller-than-average bar (it’s about half the size of a typical candy bar), so it’s pretty good if you’re looking for something that isn’t too heavy. It’s really creamy and sweet, and the quality of the chocolate is fairly decent. As you can see from the picture, the proportion of white chocolate to milk chocolate is higher here than in a Kinder Surprise, which contributes to the added creaminess of this candy. It also makes it slighter sweeter than a Kinder egg, but that is fairly negligible.

Kinder Chocolate

I liked this, but since I like Kinder Surprises, that really isn’t much of a… surprise (oh man, I’m terrible). These are a lot easier to eat than one of the eggs, so if you don’t really care about the toy, then this is probably the way to go.

Hershey’s Kisses: Chocolate Truffle – The Best Hershey’s Kisses Ever?

These were a bit of a surprise. I’ve never particularly been a fan of Hershey’s Kisses – the crumbly texture and overly sweet taste has always struck me as being even worse than the typical Hershey milk chocolate. Plus, my experience with Hershey-made truffles has so far been less than stellar. But these were actually pretty tasty. Maybe it helps that my expectations were so low.

Hershey's Kisses: Chocolate Truffle

A package of Hershey’s Kisses: Chocolate Truffle consists of five truffle-filled milk chocolate Kisses. I’m not sure if you can tell from the picture, but there’s really not a whole lot of the truffle filling in there. That’s probably a good thing, as Hershey’s truffles tend to be fairly mediocre. The milk chocolate is quite creamy; so creamy, in fact, that it’s hard to differentiate the chocolate from the truffle when you’re eating it. It’s quite sweet, of course, but not as sweet as you might expect.

Hershey's Kisses: Chocolate Truffle

Again, the low expectations might have helped – this is one of those things where I had pretty much decided that I wasn’t going to like it right from the get-go – but this wasn’t bad at all, and certainly something I could see myself buying again. They’re definitely the best Hershey’s Kisses that I’ve had so far, though I’m far from a Kiss expert.

Buncha Crunch – A Big Downgrade from the Bar

The combination of puffed rice and milk chocolate is definitely a good one, so I enjoy eating a Crunch bar every now and then, even if the quality of the chocolate is a bit on the iffy side. Buncha Crunch is essentially just a bite-sized version of Crunch, so it should pretty much taste the same, right? Well…

Buncha Crunch

Buncha Crunch consists of little clusters of puffed rice covered in milk chocolate. Its main problem is that the ratio of chocolate to puffed rice is way off – it’s not nearly chocolately enough. It’s pretty crunchy, but the chocolate seems to be holding the rice together more than anything else. So if you’re craving chocolate, this isn’t going to do it for you. What little chocolate there is isn’t particularly good; it’s more sweet than anything else.

Buncha Crunch

I was really not enjoying this at all to start with, though it did sort of grow on me as I ate it. Despite that, there’s no reason at all to pick this over a Crunch bar other than the convenience factor (Crunch bars tend to be a bit crumbly and messy, so they’re tough to eat on the go).

Cadbury Creme Egg – An Easter Classic

Easter is actually still a while off – it’s not until April 19th this year – but I guess that’s close enough for Cadbury, as the seasonal Creme Eggs are starting to hit the shelves.

Cadbury Creme Egg

Cadbury Creme Eggs are sweet; extremely sweet. As a kid, despite my love for all things sugary, Creme Eggs’ overwhelming sweetness was just a bit too much for me. I’ve since come to appreciate the Creme Egg, though its status as a once-a-year seasonal item is probably for the best, as it’s really not the kind of thing you want to eat on a regular basis (or at least I don’t).

Cadbury Creme Egg

As you can see from the picture above, Cadbury Creme Eggs can be a bit tricky to eat; the very soft centre combined with the relatively hard chocolate makes these things prone to crumble and fall apart, creating a bit of a mess. The filling is quite sticky, so you really need to be careful when you’re eating one. As for the taste: the chocolate is typical Cadbury milk chocolate – sweet, and fairly creamy. The fondant filling is essentially just soft, creamy sugar. It is what it is; you probably already have an opinion on whether you like these things, or if they’re just too sweet for you. I like them, but now that I’ve had one, I think I can wait until Easter 2010 to have another.
