Kit Kat Orange – It’s Just as Tasty as You’d Hope

I’m not gonna lie; this one kinda blew me away.  It has been a while since I’ve had a classic Kit Kat, so maybe I just forgot how good it is, but I enjoyed the hell out of this.

As you’d probably exect, Kit Kat Orange is basically a standard Kit Kat, but with an orange flavour.  I know the chocolate/orange combo isn’t for everyone, but I’m a fan.

Kit Kats are great, chocolate and orange is great — so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that this is great, too.

Kit Kat Orange

It’s exactly what you’re hoping it’s going to be.  I’m fairly confident that I don’t need to explain the appeal of a Kit Kat to you; you’ve eaten it, and you like it.  You’re not a monster, after all.

This is that, but with a satisfying amount of orangey flavour added into the mix.  It’s creamy, it’s crispy, it’s chocolatey, it’s orangey; it’s delicious.

Kit Kat Orange

It’s quite sweet, but the sweetness is perfectly tempered by the wheaty/toasty wafers.  And the orange flavour is very nicely tuned — it complements the milk chocolate flavour without overwhelming it.  It reminded me a lot of a Terry’s Chocolate Orange.  It’s delightful.

Necco Wafers – A Surprisingly Unpleasant Classic Candy

I think with a lot of the foods we like – candy in particular – nostalgia can be a pretty powerful force. We all have a handful of foods that we enjoy despite the fact that, deep down, we know aren’t very good. Perhaps they’re associated with pleasant childhood memories, or maybe years of eating them with our undiscerning and still-developing palates have blinded us to how they really taste. Either way, there’s no denying that nostalgia can have a pretty strong effect on our tastebuds.

That’s really the only explanation I can think of for the ongoing success of Necco Wafers, which have been around for almost a hundred years. People eat them as kids, like them (because kids will like pretty much any candy) and then pass them on to their own kids. It’s a vicious circle, really.

Necco Wafers are very chalk-like, complete with a powdery residue left on your fingers. They’re quite crunchy – they’re kind of like a crunchier Pez, at least texturally.

Necco Wafers

The flavours, which aren’t mentioned anywhere on the packaging (thanks Wikipedia!), break down as follows:

Lemon: This is probably the best flavour in the roll. It’s sweet, with a mild lemony taste. It’s also the most Pez-like of the flavours, which is a good thing.

Orange: This is also pretty decent. This and lemon were the first two flavours I tried, so I was initially thinking “Hey, this isn’t nearly as bad as I remember!” That’s when I tried…

Lime: This has a much stronger citrus flavour than Lemon or Orange. It tastes almost exactly like a lot of bathroom cleaning sprays smell, which is off-putting to say the least.

Clove: Yeah, that’s right – clove. I’m really not sure what to say about this other than that it’s not entirely disgusting, but also not something I’d ever want to eat again.

Necco Wafers

Cinnamon: This one was decent; it’s mildly spicy with a strong cinnamon flavour, kind of like cinnamon gum or a milder version of those spicy cinnamon hearts you find around Valentine’s Day.

Wintergreen: Odd. Hot, with a somewhat toothpastey flavour.

Licorice: This one isn’t bad, assuming you like black licorice. It’s not the best licorice ever, but considering the calibre of the rest of these, I’ll take anything that isn’t completely gross as a win.

Chocolate: Very sweet, with a strongly sugary / fake-chocolatey taste.

It’s pretty clear that despite Necco Wafers’ stature as a classic American candy, they’re just not very good. After eating about half of the pack, I felt nauseous, and my tongue had an oddly tingly, numb feeling, which persisted even hours later. This is my second time trying Necco Wafers, and I can pretty much guarantee that it’ll be my last.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange: Mini Segments – A Fun Twist on a Classic Flavour

Terry’s Chocolate Orange are those fun, baseball-sized chocolates that you get to slam onto the counter in order to separate all the little segments. They are surprisingly delicious (I say surprisingly because, though the combination of chocolate and orange doesn’t exactly sound like a slam dunk, it actually works a lot better than you’d imagine).

These minis are pre-separated and individually wrapped, so you don’t need to slam them on anything (unless you want to, I guess). They all feature that classic combination of creamy chocolate and fruity orange that have made Terry’s so famous, with a bit of a twist. They are:

Puffed Rice: The puffed rice really doesn’t add much here – there’s not much of it, and the rice itself isn’t particularly crispy. It’s still good, but only because the chocolate is good; I normally like the combination of chocolate and puffed rice, but here the somewhat soggy rice is completely superfluous, and if anything, detracts from the chocolate. Definitely the weakest of the bunch.

Terry's Chocolate Orange: Mini Segments

Milk Chocolate: This is just the standard Terry’s Chocolate Orange, no frills. The milk chocolate is nice and creamy, and it strikes a good balance between the chocolate the and orange. Good stuff.

Cornflakes: This is definitely a big improvement over the rice; the flakes add a satisfying crispiness to the chocolate, and along with that, they contribute a surprisingly pronounced corny flavour.

Dark Chocolate: This is about a half-and-half split between the milk and the dark chocolate. If you’re not necessarily a fan of Terry’s signature chocolate/orange taste, this is probably the one for you – the dark chocolate doesn’t seem to be orange flavoured, giving this one a much more subtle orange flavour. It’s also, not surprisingly, much less sweet than the standard chocolate orange.

Terry's Chocolate Orange: Mini Segments

Crunchy Honey: The description of “sweet, crunchy honey flavoured bits” made me think of Toblerone, however the honey bits are larger and crunchier than the ones found in that bar, and they give this a fairly strong honey aftertaste. Another winner.

Aside from the somewhat anemic puffed rice flavour, these are all quite good an a definite must-buy if you’re a fan of Terry’s Chocolate Orange. However, with the possible exception of the dark variant, these all definitely have that specific Terry’s flavour, so if you’re not already a fan then these aren’t going to change your mind.
