Walnut Whip – Chocolatey, Gooey, and Tasty

I wasn’t even sure what to expect from Walnut Whip, a British candy that I hadn’t heard of until I ordered it for this blog.  It looks more like an oversized selection from a box of chocolates than like a traditional candy bar, but it’s basically like a Valomilk or a Mallo Cup in a different shape.

Walnut Whip

It’s pretty simple — it features what the packaging calls a “fondant centre” surrounded by a thick layer of milk chocolate and topped with a walnut.

The fondant is creamy and marshmallow-like (it’s extremely similar to Marshmallow Fluff, though without the vanilla flavour, which I missed), and the milk chocolate is very British; Walnut Whip is a Nestle product, but the chocolate tastes like it’s trying hard to be Dairy Milk.

Walnut Whip

The walnut, oddly enough, is a bit superfluous; it adds some crunch, but is otherwise lost among the sweet chocolate and even sweeter filling.  Still, the whole thing is tasty enough — it’s probably better than Mallo Cup, but not quite as good as Valomilk.

Aero Truffle: Black Forest Cake – A Delicious Combo of Cherry and Chocolate

The last Aero Truffle bar I tried was the chocolate mousse variety, which I enjoyed, but probably wouldn’t ever buy again.  I sort of figured that this would be more of the same.  I also wondered about the black forest cake element; is that just a fancier way of saying that the truffle part is cherry-flavoured?

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this.  It’s delightful.

Aero Truffle: Black Forest Cake

I should note that I quite like black forest cake; your enjoyment of this bar very much depends on your fondness for the cherry/chocolate combo.  The cherry flavour is not subtle.

If you do like that combo, however, you need to try this bar ASAP — it’s great.  There’s no actual cherry in the ingredients, which seems like a red flag, but there’s absolutely none of the cloying, medicine-like flavour that you sometimes get from cherry candies.  The cherry flavour is quite nice.

Aero Truffle: Black Forest Cake

The bar features a dark chocolate coating and a milk chocolate interior, which does a great job of tempering the intense sweetness that you normally get from an Aero bar, and adds a nice punch of rich dark chocolate flavour.

Maybe I wouldn’t have come up with the connection if I had eaten this blind, but the whole thing is actually pretty reminiscent of a black forest cake.  It’s a lot better than I was expecting it to be.

Kit Kat White – It’s Missing Something

Regular Kit Kat might just be the greatest candy bar on the planet.  Kit Kat White & Milk?  Also delicious.  No, it’s not as good as the original, but what is?  So I sort of assumed that Kit Kat White, which forgoes the milk chocolate altogether, would still be delicious.

It is not.

Kit Kat White

I like white chocolate, but in the context of a Kit Kat, it’s hard not to feel like something is missing.  It’s sweet and milky and tasty in its own way, but the added punch of flavour you get from actual chocolate is sorely missed.  It feels a bit one-note.

It probably doesn’t help that, like with so many white chocolate confections, it’s not actually white chocolate — if you look at the wrapper, the word “chocolate” is conspicuously absent.  That’s because there are various oils in the ingredients (along with cocoa butter), which means that legally, this ain’t chocolate.

Kit Kat White

Still, it’s not bad (bottom-of-the-barrel mockolate doesn’t bother with cocoa butter at all); it’s fairly creamy and not particularly waxy.  The biggest issue is the flavour, or lack thereof.  It’s just sweet and crispy — and hey, there’s nothing wrong with that, but I can’t imagine that I’d ever buy this again.  Especially when regular Kit Kat is right there, and is like a billion times better.

Aero Truffle: Chocoalte Mousse – Aero Milk Chocolate with a Creamy Truffle Layer

This is one of those bars that doesn’t really need a review.  I don’t know what I can tell you that isn’t right in the name of the bar; it’s Aero with creamy chocolate truffle filling crammed on top.  It pretty much tastes how you think it will.

Aero Truffle

It’s tasty in all the ways you expect (it’s also extremely sweet, but then so is classic Aero), though I do wish that the dense truffle filling were creamier, which would probably contrast better with the bubbly milk chocolate.  This would also help it resemble its namesake a bit better — there are pretty much no mousse-like properties here, other than the chocolate flavour.

Aero Truffle

My biggest problem is that the bar is kinda neither here nor there — there isn’t enough of the truffle filling to give you a nice hit of the creamy, rich truffle texture, and of course, the bubbly chocolate that you normally find in an Aero is reduced to make room for the truffle.  I enjoyed eating it, but given the choice, I’d rather just have a regular chocolate truffle or a classic Aero bar.

Kit Kat Chunky: Popcorn – Surprisingly Strong Popcorn Flavour

I wasn’t sure what to expect with the popcorn version of Kit Kat Chunky.  Considering that Kit Kat Chunky’s cookie dough variety basically doesn’t taste like cookie dough at all, I sort of figured that this would be more of the same.

I was extremely wrong.  Popcorn Kit Kat Chunky pretty much hits you in the face with popcorn flavour.

Kit Kat Chunky: Popcorn

My assumption was that the white stuff on top of the wafer would be some kind of popcorn-flavoured paste, but there are actual bits of popcorn in there, and their flavour is surprisingly strong.  It’s mildly buttery, slightly salty, and actually compliments the toasty wafers and the sweet chocolate surprisingly well.  The chunks are also large enough to add a bit of their own texture on top of the crispiness of the wafers.

Kit Kat Chunky: Popcorn

It’s more of a fun novelty than anything else, but if you’re intrigued by the combination of Kit Kat + popcorn, you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised.
