Kit Kat Gold – Almost as Delicious as the Original

Though I had initially assumed that Kit Kat Gold was a spin-off of Hershey’s Gold, they’re actually not affiliated. Remember, while Hershey makes Kit Kat in America, it’s made by Nestle in the rest of the world — and Kit Kat Gold is a Nestle product. I guess the word “gold” is too generic to copyright.

Like the Hershey version, the main draw here is the presence of caramelized white “chocolate,” and like the Hershey version, the chocolate isn’t real. The label simply calls it “caramelized white gold,” and Nestle’s website calls it “caramelized-white chocolatey coating.”

However, as I’ve noticed with other Kit Kat varieties made with mockolate, the presence of the fake stuff doesn’t have much of an impact on the tastiness of the bar. There’s almost no waxiness here, and the presence of the crispy wafers covers up any of the mockolate’s textural shortcomings.

It’s really, really good. This might actually be one of my favourite Kit Kat varieties — the toastiness of the wafers and the mild caramel flavour from the coating is a boffo combination. As usual with Kit Kat varieties, the wafers do a great job of balancing out the overall sweetness of the bar. It’s surprisingly delicious.

Coffee Crisp Stix: Salted Caramel – Sweet Wafery Goodness

What is that thick layer in the middle of a Coffee Crisp? Flavoured white chocolate? I honestly have no idea.

Whatever it is, it’s missing from Coffee Crisp Stix. I would have thought that this would make this thing taste less like Coffee Crisp and more like a generic wafer bar, but its identity is relatively intact; it definitely has the distinctive flavour of its namesake.

I basically tastes like a lighter, more wafery version of Coffee Crisp. It’s tasty in most of the same ways, so suffice it to say, if you like Coffee Crisp you’re probably going to like this (and if you’re not Canadian and have no idea what Coffee Crisp is — don’t worry, you’re not missing out on anything too mind-blowing).

I’m pretty sure the exterior is actually mockolate and not chocolate (it’s pretty waxy), but it’s thin enough that it’s not really a big deal.

As for the salted caramel, I didn’t notice much of a caramel flavour, but there’s definitely a mild saltiness that does a nice job of complimenting the bar’s sweetness.

Kit Kat Chunky: Caramel – Way too Sweet

I don’t think there’s any other candy bar with as many varieties as Kit Kat. It’s not even close. According to Wikipedia, over 300 flavours of Kit Kat have been made for the Japanese market alone, and Japan definitely isn’t the only country in the weird Kit Kat game.

They’re able to do this with Kit Kat because the wafer/chocolate combo is basic enough to lend itself to any number of flavour varieties, and delicious enough that basically anything you throw at it is going to taste good.

Kit Kat Chunky, on the other hand, seems to be a different story. I think the biggest problem is that, instead of merely adding a flavour to the chocolate, they actually cram something into the bar itself, on top of the wafer (caramel, in this case). This means that they have to use a smaller wafer (about half the size, as far as I can tell), which throws off the balance of the bar.

Kit Kat Chunky: Cookie Dough had the same issue. The crispy wafer normally does a great job of balancing out the bar’s sweetness, but the smaller version here isn’t particularly able to perform that function. This is especially an issue with the gooey caramel, which is intensely sweet. It’s overwhelming.

It’s too bad, because this seems like a great idea in theory, but in practice it’s a bit sickening in its unrelenting sweetness.

Aero Peppermint – It’s Aero, but Minty

Sometimes these candy reviews basically write themselves, and sometimes… they do not. This one definitely falls into the latter category.

I mean, it’s right there in the name. It’s minty Aero. It tastes exactly how you think it’s going to taste. It’s Aero that’s minty. The end.

Oh, that’s not enough? Fine, a bit more. Here’s the thing: it’s Aero… that’s minty. What? Did I say that already? Fine.

The chocolate is nice and creamy, the bubbles give it that interesting texture that Aero fans know and love, and the whole thing is very, very sweet. But the strong minty flavour (this is absolutely not a subtle bar) makes the sweetness feel right. It’s tasty stuff.

Milky Bar – Average White Chocolate

Here’s something odd: the wrapper of the Milky Bar I ate for this review contains two separate lists of ingredients. One of them is on the wrapper itself, and one is on a sticker, presumably put there by the company that imported the British bar into Canada.

The lists are surprisingly different. Most pressingly, the sticker version lists sugar as the first ingredient, directly contradicting the wrapper’s proclamation that “milk is our no. 1 ingredient.” Is milk the number one ingredient or not? Who am I supposed to believe??

Anyway, it’s plain white chocolate, so there’s not much to it. I should note that the sticker on the front of the wrapper is keen to point out that’s it’s actually a “white chocolaty candy bar” rather than a white chocolate candy bar, presumably due to the inclusion of vegetable fat supplementing the cocoa butter.

It’s tasty enough. I guess it’s not technically real white chocolate, but it’s fairly creamy. True to its name, it has a pronounced milky flavour. It’s not the best white chocolate you’ll ever eat, but it’ll do in a pinch.
