Mirage – Milk Chocolate with a Unique Texture

The continued existence of both Mirage and Aero is somewhat baffling to me. They’re both pretty much the exact same thing — plain, aerated milk chocolate — and they’re both made by Nestle.

Aero easily has the higher profile, so why Nestle hasn’t just discontinued Mirage for being completely redundant is a bit of a head-scratcher.

The biggest difference between the two, as far as I can tell, is that the bubbles in Mirage seem a bit smaller. But I’d have to eat them side-by-side to know for sure.

They’re otherwise pretty much exactly the same: overly sweet, okay-quality milk chocolate that’s elevated by the pleasant texture you get from the aeration. The chocolate here would be just so-so without the delightful bubbliness, but the unique texture it brings definitely makes this worth trying out.

Kit Kat Cookie Crumble – Tasty, but a Downgrade from the Original

The problem with a lot of these Kit Kat varieties is that the original Kit Kat is basically perfect, so there’s really nowhere to go but down. The original still exists and it’s so damn good, which means it’s hard not to wonder what the point is of so many of the new flavours that they keep churning out.

This is less of an issue with out-there varieties like Birthday Cake or Apple Pie, which bring enough of their own unique personality to justify their existence. But with something like Cookie Crumble — which is tasty, no doubt about it — it kinda just made me crave a standard Kit Kat.

Still, there’s nothing wrong with it. Featuring chocolate wafers and bits of cookie crumbs, it has a cocoa-infused chocolate cookie flavour that’s fairly satisfying. The hint of bitterness you get from the cocoa goes nicely with the other flavours in the bar, and while the whole thing is a bit too sweet, it’s pretty tasty. But it’s not hugely different from a standard Kit Kat, and everything about it that is different is inferior.

Kit Kat Caramel Crisp – An Overwhelming Punch of Caramel

The smell hits you hard when you open the Kit Kat Caramel Crisp wrapper — caramel, but caramel times a million. It’s intense.

The flavour is equally intense. Featuring bits of crispy caramel in a thick milk chocolate coating, the caramel flavour here is unmistakable and overpowering. There’s also something about it that’s vaguely off; the packaging lists “natural flavour” among the ingredients, and there must be some kind of flavouring going on because normal caramel shouldn’t taste like this.

It’s also intensely sweet. The nice thing about Kit Kat, normally, is that the wafers do a great job of balancing out the chocolate’s sweetness. But the outer coating of chocolate here is so thick and so sweet that it completely overwhelms the wafer. The wafer adds crispiness, but that’s about it.

Also adding texture: the toffee-like crispy caramel bits. The creamy/crispy contrast here is quite nice; it’s just too bad that the flavour is a bit wonky.

Aero Dark Chipotle Truffle – A Nice Combo of Sweet and Spice

Spicy chocolate is an odd combo that can be off-putting if done poorly. Done right, however, and the spiciness adds a nice warm heat that compliments dark chocolate surprisingly well.

I honestly didn’t think Aero could pull it off, but hey, what do you know — they did it.

The chipotle truffle part of the bar doesn’t have a ton of flavour — there’s a mild floral heat, but for the most part, the bar tastes of dark chocolate with a bonus spicy kick. The level of spice is mostly just a mild tingle; you don’t even notice it at first. It’s there, but it’s subtle enough that it never gets in the way or makes the bar taste gimmicky.

And the dark chocolate is quite tasty; it’s on the sweeter side (the sweetness is likely amped up by the milk chocolate interior, which complements the dark quite well), but it has a deep chocolatey flavour that’s quite satisfying. As for the texture, the snappy exterior and the classic Aero bubbliness is a delightful combo.

Aero White Chocolate – A Tasty Combo of White and Milk Chocolate

I think it’s clear at this point that combining white chocolate with milk chocolate is the way to go. Stuff like Kit Kat White & Milk and Kinder Chocolate is proof that it’s a great combo. I like white chocolate, but in the absence of cocoa solids, its flavour tends to be a bit one-note sweet. Adding milk chocolate thoroughly solves that problem while still retaining white chocolate’s distinct personality.

Aero White Chocolate, despite the name, isn’t fully white — it features a milk chocolate exterior with an aerated white chocolate interior.

It’s quite good. It’s got an interesting texture from the bubbles in the middle, enough milk chocolate to give it a nice punch of cocoa flavour, and a creamy white chocolate base that gives it a pleasant milkiness. If you’ve ever had Kinder Chocolate, this is the same idea, but with the bubbliness you get from an Aero.

It’s very sweet — white chocolate does tend to be on the sweeter side — but not overwhelmingly so. The milk chocolate does a solid job of balancing things out.
